About General Music
This school year (2017-2018) we are planning to return to the classical tradition - we will study classical composers, composition techniques, and musical form in order to create short original compositions. Students will also be tasked with learning a classical piece of music on the piano, guitar, or xylophones. We will finish up our journey through the world of classical music by exploring film music, eventually working to create our own short films to study leitmotif (character theme music).
Featured Student Work: Theme and Variation
Our first composition of is a Theme and Variation; this means students were given a theme (Beethoven's "Ode to Joy") and were tasked with writing a variation on the theme. Basically, a Theme and Variation is the classical music version of a remix. Students were asked to change rhythms, add harmonies, and create new instrument parts that highlighted and elevated the original theme. In each of the two samples, you'll hear "Ode to Joy" in its original entirety before hearing what these students created.
