Performances

Our Pops concert was great, dance moves and all! Now we shift our attention to our Spring concert, the Garden Ceremony, and the Great East Music Festival. Our new repertoire includes:

Bonse Aba! - a Zambian song
Ahrirang - a Korean folk song
Seize the Day! - from "Newsies"
TBD: Students are voting on a song of their choice to add to our concert

The Treblemakers rocked the house with their rendition of "Carry On Wayward Son" and sounded great when they teamed up with Back to Bassics on the high school concert. Our next song will be "Tell My Father" from the musical The Civil War. Dads - bring some tissues.

Many students from Select Chorus are preparing for the Vermont ACDA Children's Honor Choir Festival in Burlington on May 4th and 5th. The concert is at 1 pm on Saturday, May 5th at the First Baptist Church for anyone who will be in the Burlington area! For our next school performance, they'll be singing "When Love Takes Over" from The Passion: New Orleans.

About

Chorus is to anyone who loves to sing and is willing to work at getting better both as a soloist and within a group. Students enrolled in chorus can expect to perform a wide range of different song styles. Chorus will be split into two sections beginning in the third trimester due to the number of students in chorus (71!). This will not affect elective class choices.

The 16/17 school year saw the addition of a select chorus comprised of 18 JH students who were selected after an audition process. Our goal is to provide students with the opportunity to use their advanced knowledge to make music at a higher level. Aside from school concerts, we have performed at Newport Healthcare Center, carolled in school and at Derby Green, and participated in the Vermont ACDA Children's Honor Choir in Burlington.

The 17/18 school year has seen the addition of another choral opportunity: a Boys' Chorus (now called the North Country Treblemakers). Our goal is to provide male singers with a safe space to experiment with their changing voices and to get more boys interested in singing. This group is open to any interested students (whether they are in chorus or not) and will meet after school once a week. The North Country Treblemakers will rehearse all year and will feature in each of our scheduled concerts. Any students interested in this new opportunity should talk to Mr. Johnstone if they have any questions or would like to participate.

Grading for chorus has shifted from the "traditional" scale to standards-based grades. On PowerSchool, you will find the letters S, M, P, and B rather than A-F; these stand for:

S = Surpassing
M = Meeting
P = Progressing
B = Beginning

Here you will find a rubric that details how students are assessed in chorus. Concerts are assessed as a group, not individuals. It is important to note that receiving a B early in the year is acceptable! The students are being assessed based on where they should be in June, not October.
